What makes the SmokeStone different from other griddles?
It really comes down to precision, consistency, and flavor. The key to great outdoor cooking is being able to get the same results cook after cook, and that's where the SmokeStone stands apart. Powered by recteq's consistent temperature control thanks to PID technology, it continuously monitors and adjusts temperatures to help keep the cooking surface steady and predictable.
Is a PID-controlled griddle the only way to cook? Of course not. But when you can eliminate temperature guesswork, it's easier to cook with confidence and get the results you're after.
And unlike traditional gas griddles, the SmokeStone adds authentic wood-fired flavor to every meal. From smash burgers and cheesesteaks to breakfast and fried rice, you get the consistency of precision temperature control with the flavor that only wood pellets can deliver. Trust us, you just have to experience it for yourself and then you’ll understand.

Why choose a pellet-fueled griddle?
It really comes down to flavor and performance. If you've been part of the recteq community for a while, you've already tasted the difference wood-fired flavor can make. With the SmokeStone 480, we've brought that same flavor to griddle-style cooking, giving everything from burgers and breakfast to cheesesteaks and fried rice an extra layer of flavor.
The recteq SmokeStone 480 features our ground-breaking PID Smart Grill technology. It’s that same PID grill tech that captured the BBQ community by storm from our first pellet grill, only now it’s the heart of the SmokeStone. This impressive tech provides perfect temperature consistency across the cooking surface.
With other griddles, as you add cold food to the surface, the temp can’t adapt, so you find yourself with inconsistent results. However, with the SmokeStone’s consistent temp control, the cooking surface stays even, predictable, and steady no matter what. Besides those rock-solid temps, the blower fan circulates the flavor across the griddle with the help of 360º vents surrounding the cooking surface. Most importantly, as the fire is positioned under the griddle surface, it is not affected by wind and weather elements, giving it another advantage over gas-fueled griddle models on the market.

Why Cold Rolled Steel for the cooking surface of the SmokeStone?
Here's why we chose Cold Rolled Steel for the SmokeStone cooking surface instead of stainless steel or cast iron. Stainless steel is non-reactive, which is great, but it doesn't hold heat as well, making it slower to recover and more prone to sticking. Cast iron retains heat well, but it's high maintenance and more vulnerable to rust from rain, humidity, and everyday outdoor exposure. It can also crack or warp when heated and cooled too quickly.
Cold Rolled Steel gives you the best of both worlds. It heats quickly, retains heat effectively, provides a smooth cooking surface, and offers excellent resistance to warping at high temperatures. And while it can rust if neglected, it's easy to maintain and recondition when needed.
At recteq, we're grillers helping grillers. We believe outdoor cooking should be about making great food, not extra maintenance. That's why Cold Rolled Steel is the perfect fit for the SmokeStone.
Can the SmokeStone replace my grill?
That depends on what and how you cook, but for many backyard cooks, the answer is yes. If you regularly cook steaks, chops, burgers, vegetables, breakfast, or other hot-and-fast meals, the SmokeStone can easily become your primary outdoor cooker while delivering consistent results and authentic wood-fired flavor.
It also shines when cooking for a crowd. Take quesadillas, for example. Making several at once on a stovetop can be challenging, with some ending up overcooked while others aren't quite ready. The SmokeStone gives you plenty of room to cook proteins, vegetables, and multiple quesadillas at the same time, making it easier to get everything hot and ready to serve together.
Whether you're making a quick weeknight dinner or feeding the whole family, the SmokeStone can simplify the cooking process and elevate the way you cook outdoors.

Does the SmokeStone come pre-seasoned?
Absolutely! The SmokeStone arrives ready to cook, with no pre-seasoning required. Simply wash the griddle surface with mild detergent, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Once it's preheated, you're ready to start cooking your favorite meals. For ongoing care and maintenance, follow the cleaning instructions below.
What are the benefits of being able to cook with the lid closed?
Most outdoor griddles either don't have a lid or aren't designed to be used with the lid closed during cooking. The SmokeStone is different. Its stainless steel-lined powder-coated lid can be closed whenever the situation calls for it.
While you can griddle with the lid open at any time, closing the lid can be helpful for steaming vegetables, melting cheese on burgers or cheesesteaks, and helping food pick up even more wood-fired flavor. It's a simple feature that adds versatility and gives you more control over the cooking process.
How quickly does the SmokeStone heat up?
While the SmokeStone may not preheat quite as fast as a propane griddle, it's ready to cook in about 8-10 minutes and takes the guesswork out of knowing when the cooking surface is at temperature.
The SmokeStone uses the same proven recteq technology found in our pellet grills, including a ceramic ignition system, blower fan, and PID temperature control. Together, these components light the fire quickly, bring the griddle up to temp efficiently, and help keep it there throughout the cook.
In other words, spend a few minutes preheating and you'll be rewarded with consistent temperatures and predictable results from the first bite to the last.

How do you prevent food from sticking?
Food sticking to the griddle can be frustrating, but it usually comes down to two things: proper preheating and patience. Start by making sure the SmokeStone is fully preheated before adding food. The built-in controller displays the actual griddle temperature, so you'll know exactly when it's ready to cook.
Once your food hits the griddle, leave it alone. As tempting as it may be to constantly move things around, allowing food to develop a proper crust is what helps it naturally release from the cooking surface. That's how you get a great sear on steaks, beautifully blackened fish, and perfectly cooked eggs.
It also helps to keep the surface lightly oiled and make sure your food is as dry as possible before cooking. Excess moisture can create steam, making it harder to develop a good crust. And if something does stick, don't sweat it. A little water, a quick scrape, and you'll be right back to cooking.
Does the SmokeStone have multiple heat zones?
No. The SmokeStone is powered by a single firepot, which helps maintain a consistent temperature across the cooking surface. For most home cooks, that's a major advantage. Instead of managing multiple burners and heat zones, you can focus on cooking great food.
With recteq's consistent emperature control, you can set your desired temperature and monitor the exact griddle temperature right from the controller. That means less guesswork, more consistency, and the ability to confidently recreate your favorite recipes cook after cook.
Sometimes, simple is better. The SmokeStone is designed to deliver steady, predictable heat so you can focus on the food instead of managing the fire.

What foods are best cooked on the SmokeStone?
The short answer? Just about anything. From steaks, chops, and blackened fish to burgers, hot sandwiches, pancakes, and brunch favorites, the SmokeStone is built for a wide variety of cooks.
Where it really shines is cooking an entire meal at once. With plenty of cooking space and precise temps, you can prepare proteins, vegetables, and sides together without juggling multiple pans or making a mess in the kitchen.
Whether you're making breakfast for the family, a weeknight dinner, or a backyard feast, the SmokeStone makes it easy to cook more food with less hassle, all while adding authentic wood-fired flavor.
Can I use pots and pans on the SmokeStone? What about cast-iron?
Yes! One of the biggest advantages of a flat-top griddle like the SmokeStone is its versatility. You can use everything from ring molds and foil pans to Dutch ovens and cast-iron cookware directly on the cooking surface.
The cold rolled steel cooking surface transfers heat efficiently, making it easy to fry, simmer, warm, or finish dishes right on the griddle. Whether you're keeping a pot of grits warm, shallow frying in a Dutch oven, or building the perfect breakfast sandwich, the SmokeStone gives you plenty of flexibility.
Best of all, splatters and spills stay outside, cleanup is easy, and you don't have to fill your kitchen with extra dishes or fryer smells. That's just one more way the SmokeStone helps make outdoor cooking easier and more enjoyable.

Can I bake on the SmokeStone?
Yes, and it’s easier than you think. With the lid closed, the SmokeStone can do much more than traditional griddling. For best results, simply create a buffer between the cooking surface and your bakeware using a wire rack, inverted sheet pan, or even aluminum foil "logs."
From cookies and brownies to casseroles and cheesecakes, the SmokeStone makes baking easy. As heat radiates from the cold rolled steel surface, the blower fan helps circulate heat and wood-fired flavor for even cooking and delicious results.
Keep temperatures on the lower end, close the lid, and let the SmokeStone do the work. You might be surprised by how much this griddle can do.
Does the SmokeStone have a grease management system?
Absolutely. When designing the SmokeStone, our team of chefs spent a lot of time testing different griddles and paying attention to the little things that can impact the cooking experience. One common frustration was grease management, specifically the size and placement of the grease bucket and drip hole.
That's why the SmokeStone features a front-right grease management system that's positioned to stay out of your cooking space while still making cleanup easy. The grease bucket and drip opening are generously sized, so you won't have to worry about them filling up during a cook.
For even easier cleanup, disposable bucket liners are available at recteq.com. It's a simple feature, but it's one that makes griddling more convenient from start to finish.

How should I clean the SmokeStone?
Don't overcomplicate it. After cooking, let the griddle surface stay hot for a few minutes to help dry out any remaining food residue. Use the flat scraper from the Griddle Accessory Kit to remove debris, then wipe the surface with a dry, lint-free towel and a light coat of neutral oil or griddle conditioner.
If you're dealing with a messier cook or sugary sauces, add a small amount of room-temperature water to the hot surface to loosen any stubborn bits. Scrape, wipe, and reapply a light coat of oil. Repeat as needed, then you're ready for the next cook.
Do I need a griddle if I already own a pellet grill?
Not necessarily, but a griddle can be a great addition to your outdoor cooking setup. While your pellet grill excels at smoking, roasting, and low-and-slow cooking, the SmokeStone opens the door to techniques that are difficult or impossible on traditional grill grates.
Think smash burgers, cheesesteaks, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, fried rice, and perfectly crisped bacon. The flat-top cooking surface gives you more versatility and makes it easy to cook foods that benefit from direct contact with the griddle.
For many backyard cooks, the best setup is having both. Use your pellet grill when you want to smoke and indirect heat, and fire up the SmokeStone when it's time for breakfast, burgers, or quick weeknight meals. Together, they give you even more ways to cook outdoors.
